An introduction to learning disability and Autism
MEET LAUREN!
Lauren is a young person with a learning disability, a peer mentor of the CAN Pathways youth program and a passionate advocate. The training she delivers alongside the Youth Navigator Karen is intended to provide a general understanding of learning disabilities and Autism, and the associated challenges individuals face on a daily basis.
The introductory session is provided to organisations and businesses alike, and remains interactive to promote and sustain equality and inclusion. In this way, the stigma around learning disability and Autism is reduced with education on both, and promotes a more inclusive culture regardless of differences.
It has recently been adapted for mainstream schools, youth groups and other organisations who work with children, teenagers and young adults with learning disabilities, Autism and mental health issues.

Youth Navigator
I was first a Base Co-ordinator which involved supporting and empowering adults in making choices and teaching them to learn in a safe, inclusive, non-judgmental environment. I was then a Senior Skills Coach under the WE CAN project which involved spending time with the trainees to support the development of their skills for future employment.
At present I am now the Pathways Youth Navigator, and I now support families and young people with the transition to adulthood. My job role is advising and signposting parents and young people to whatever support is available, and hosting monthly parent group meetings.
